Lukla...

March 31, 2011

We left the hotel in Kathmandu at 5 am and went back to the airport.  The weather was nice, and we got through security surprisingly smooth - with the help of the very friendly security people.  Although, I couldn’t help thinking that the “luggage check machines” might have been just painted plywood boxes with a light mounted on top of it…  The flight to Lukla was quite interesting, and luckily the weather held long enough to get out of Kathmandu.  Landing in Lukla is tricky since the pilots need to have sight of the very short landing strip.  Everything went well, and shortly thereafter we were on the trail to our first overnight stop in Phakding. It took about 3 hrs to get there, and we got a first impression of the Sherpa villages in the Khumbu valley.
